Sunday Night- Posts from Week One

End of our first week of classes

rain

Wee, still pretty busy. So this week we got a taste of our first class here at GAFA, figure drawing. We also were asked to tutor English to kids for a family a previous CSULB student tutored for. Finding our way into the city to meet them on Wednesday was interesting. But we made it and everything is great, it will be an interesting experience to teach english. I have some more pictures of our first days here and some new ones too! We got a bike and a washing machine these last couple of days which is really exciting!

Here we are shopping at the market on our first day in Guangzhou, lol. Oh that is an air conditioner we are next to, desperately needed.

Steph and Jenny and Yan Yan. We all first met Long Beach last year when Jenny and Yan Yan were on their year abroad. Actually, we first met at Trader Joes, before knowing we would participate in the GAFA exchange program.

Really yummy rice bowls for lunch in the Village. The bowls are ceramic and the rice gets toasty and cruchy at the bottom. Then the juices from all the stuff on top mix with the rice... it is an experience for the taste buds.

After shopping, we all had some delicious cakes on the bus ride home. Yan Yan, got Coconut, Steph had Orange, and Javier got Egg and Lotus Seed flavor.

Lunch at the school Canteen, all the Freshman students in their military gear this week. They have to do military training excercises the first few days. Lot of yelling and marching at all hours of the day, even in the rain.

Today at the Metro station on our way into the city!

And finally our new washing machine we are renting for the year, its so cute and Yan Yan said its English so it was made for us :) It also plays cute music to tell you when its doing stuff, which makes me upset that all washing machines don't do that. Anyways it's cool. We decided to name her Rosie, like the robot on the Jetsons.

So tomorrow more class and tutoring in the evening, hopefully everything goes well, we are now on a Guangzhou schedule, real breakfast and lunchtime really is nice. Will update soon!

Update

no pics though sorry!

sunny 97 °F

Hey everyone just wanted to post something, it has been a few days of class, paperwork, errands and a little bit of getting sick. Every time I go on a trip I get some sort of sick, oh well its not bad though just a cold I think.

But as interesting news goes we had a big storm last night! It started with lightning for a couple hours and then the thunder started rolling in. Seriously it got loud KKKKSSKKCRACKOOOW thats how I would descibe it. Then it started pouring rain! I was pretty scared but everyone here says its normal for this time of year. I guess the Chinese are indifferent to immenent lightning strike. But what do you know it was sunny this morning!

Soon awesome artworking pics will be up :)

A Day in Hong Kong

Wednesday September 1st

IMG_4287.jpgIMG_4290.jpg

City life as we head into the city in the morning. Hong Kong was like five New York's put together! But nothing opens early so we walked south towards the Museum of Art in Kowloon:

Great Art inside the museum and a great view of Hong Kong Island. These are pictures as we walked towards the ferry:

The ferry was sooo cheap! 2.5 HKD each. That's like 80cents for the two of us!

Just a few pics from Hong Kong Island. It's a fully modern city with plenty of construction left to go. Gigantic malls and people in suits hustling and bustling to and from work. Amazing.

Did I mention it was hot? and humid! But ducking into the shopping centers to escape the heat is great. Air conditioning everywhere. Here are some more street pics from the rest of the day:

Here in Guangzhou

we made it!

semi-overcast

Okay so we have not had access to the internet or time these past few days, its been busy!!

So here we are, we made it here by bus from the Hong Kong airport, made it through customs check and everything into mainland China, got some cool stamps in our passports :) Then we met up with Yan Yan, our student guide who met us and brought us to school. We dropped off our things and went on to some important errands, electricity cards, toilet paper, whatever.

It has been so amazing, all the food we have tried is so delicious!! We are learning to get around, so much walking. We are finally all cleaned up and unpacked, totally ready for school tomorrow! Now the fun part, some pics from these past few days!
